Nowadays, videos with “amateur” qualities are capable of providing the same kind of entertainment to an audience, and is a fundamental part of pop culture. This video is an imitation of “Mukbang”, an interactive broadcast of people eating a certain kind and quantity of food. Despite its informal nature, “Mukbangs” are currently one of the most popular videos online. Ultimately, it fascinated me how influencers use Youtube to commercialize the food that they eat, while also commercializing themselves. The video that I created possesses all the qualities of entertainment that receives popularity in this generation: filming in domestic areas, real-time interactions with the viewers, and editing the video in a trendy, yet low-quality format. Tomatoes are thrown at bad performances, yet getting high “Rotten” tomato ratings define what is a well-made movie. Something I feel correlates, and is even more ironic is perfectionism. Perfectionism is so interesting in the way of how just by its name, it should be something positive, hence “perfect” or “perfect-ness”, but it is actually the factor and/or cause that leads to the destruction of self. For me personally, the constant strive to become this “perfect” version or seek the “perfect” result never actually gave me the “perfect” ending that I was looking for. “Potato Potahto” is a representation of this realization, and guides viewers through a visual sequence of how perfectionism works in the mind, how mentally draining and emptying the process is, to a point where you reach a limit, and feel like your head(or tomato) is about to explode. It is a very loud video, even in the silent parts. This video installation is composed of entirely found images and videos, all of which encapture the way you would view yourself, the endless thought process going through your head, and the tiring process of trying to complete work the right way.Perfectionism is so difficult because you are setting yourself on an impossible goal; it’s hard not to become frustrated when the end goal is something you can never achieve. Concluding this Ted-Talk I also label as my piece description, I’ve come to realize that there is not really a “perfect” way. Personal growth and self-improvement are so important and something I am also working on, but beating yourself down because you weren’t able to achieve the “perfect” result is something I find less necessary. At first glance, it is evident that this surreal painting demonstrates a playful and childish approach, where mountains are pink, trees are balloons, and kids are dressed in dinosaur costumes. Despite these childish elements, my goal with this piece was to exhibit the concept of growth, regardless of the environment we are surrounded in. In the painting, the twin girls are surrounded by features that demonstrate both immaturity and youth; even as they are playing the tablet game, they remain poker-faced and are sitting straight and rather formally. After seeing this piece, I began to feel as if most people were boasting of the experience of visiting a gallery, rather than the aestheticism of art as a whole. To exemplify this idea of boasting, I created an art piece that is already an existing branded product, and created a face cutout for “pictures”. However, the twist of this piece is in certain elements, such as the caption on the top that reads, “If you take a picture, it’s double the price”, or how the face inflates when attempting to take a picture with the art. I am criticizing people’s attitudes towards the promotion of themselves through art, mainly in social media platforms.
