The inspiration behind this “Shringles” piece came after I saw a picture online with an influencer in front of an art piece at a museum. After seeing this piece, I began to feel as if most people were boasting of the experience of visiting a gallery, rather than the aestheticism of art as a whole. To exemplify this idea of boasting, I created an art piece that is already an existing branded product, and created a face cutout for “pictures”. However, the twist of this piece is in certain elements, such as the caption on the top that reads, “If you take a picture, it’s double the price”, or how the face inflates when attempting to take a picture with the art. I am criticizing people’s attitudes towards the promotion of themselves through art, mainly in social media platforms. There is an ironic element in that if they take pictures with this piece, it negatively affects them.
